The ZS: and the state-owned housing company Gewobag celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for the new urban quarter "Urbany" in Lichtenberg on 27.01.2023.

The governing mayor, Franziska Giffey, also attended the laying of the foundation stone. "1400 apartments - that's a house number". The project is "one of the big flagship construction projects in Berlin."

It needs "the cooperatives just as much as the private partners," Giffey stressed. "Only then will it be possible to build enough apartments in Berlin."

The "Urbany" neighborhood on Landsberger Allee consists of four building sections. The two western building sections will contain apartments for students, while the two eastern building sections will contain rental apartments. The 8-story buildings will be modern and easily accessible, and will include a daycare center as well as commercial space for retail and services. Many of the apartments will be subsidized by the state of Berlin and will therefore be subject to occupancy requirements.

The project will be built in several phases, with the first phases to be completed in late 2025/early 2026. The overall project is expected to be completed in early 2026.

"The Village-in-the-City Project" is a neighborhood concept developed by ZS to create shared and community-oriented living environments for people of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances. To this end, ZS Development has joined forces with Berlin's municipal housing associations to launch a platform whose declared goal is to improve the urban quality of life in Berlin by creating lively, mixed neighborhoods.
