Groundbreaking for a New Urban Quarter
ZS and the state-owned housing company Gewobag celebrated the groundbreaking for the new urban quarter “Urbany” in Lichtenberg on January 27, 2023.
The governing mayor, Franziska Giffey, also attended the groundbreaking ceremony. “1418 apartments – that’s a significant number.” The project is “one of the major flagship construction projects in Berlin.”
It needs “cooperatives as well as private partners,” emphasized Giffey. “Only then will it be possible to build enough apartments in Berlin.”
The “Urbany” quarter on Landsberger Allee consists of four building sections. In the two western sections, apartments for students will be built, while the two eastern sections will contain rental apartments. The 8-story buildings will be modern and easily accessible and will include commercial spaces for retail and services in addition to a daycare center. Many of the apartments will be subsidized by the state of Berlin and therefore subject to occupancy restrictions.
The project will be realized in several construction phases, with the first phases expected to be completed by the end of 2025/early 2026. The overall project is expected to be completed by early 2026.
“The village-in-the-city project” is a neighborhood concept by ZS for creating shared and community-building living environments for people of all ages, backgrounds, and life circumstances. To this end, ZS Development has launched a platform in cooperation with municipal Berlin housing companies, with the declared goal of improving urban quality of life in Berlin with vibrant, mixed urban quarters.
